About ART IS POWER:

Art is Power is an initiative under our global campaign Girls Get Equal. Girls Get Equal is not simply a statement of intent but it is our global call for action and how we believe gender equality can only be achieved. For too long, girls have been undervalued, undermined and underestimated. This must change. Through Art is Power, girls and boys express their views on girl’s right to be valued and supported as leaders, change makers and active contributors to society.

Plan International Nepal first initiated Art is Power in 2019 to mark International Day of the Girl Child. Art is Power is initiated as a platform for marginalized girls to express themselves through art. It is a chance for those without a voice to connect, through art, to those in power. In 2019, artists ran workshops in six districts for 165 girls around the themes of power, freedom and representation. This year as a consequence of the COVID 19 pandemic we decided to make Art is Power a virtual event. In collaboration with KAALO 101 we brought together girls and boys to engage them in various forms of art and learning during lockdown. KAALO 101’s strong relationships/connections to multidisciplinary artists and activists in Kathmandu, a creative vision, and a network of artists created a perfect harmony for Art is Power.

In September 2020, ten different artists conducted ten virtual workshops on a range of artistic topics - comics, spoken word poetry, theatre, and songwriting with 250 children from seven districts across Nepal - Sunsari, Banka, Bardiya, Makwanpur, Jumla, Kalikot and Sindhuli. For those children who do not have access to internet, five artists created art prompts including on calligraphy, collage and drawings. On the themes of gender equality, how girls could gain a sense of freedom and power, and representation. The exhibition you are about to visit is a result of the work done by 150 girls and boys from seven districts. We want to thank them and the artists for making this exhibition what it is.  We acknowledge the power of their words and their art. We invite you to join us in creating a world where girls get equal power, freedom and representation.

About PLAN INTERNATIONAL NEPAL:

Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls. We believe in the power and potential of every child. But this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination. And it is girls who are most affected. Working together with children, young people, our supporters and partners, we strive for a just world, tackling the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children. We support children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood. We enable children to prepare for – and respond to – crises and adversity. We drive changes in practice and policy at local, national and global levels using our reach, experience and knowledge.

Plan International Nepal has been working in Nepal since 1978 to enable marginalised children as well as their families and communities, to access their rights to health, education, and protection. Currently our programmes are running in 12 districts through our development partners.
